Both National Football League conference championship games were contested on Sunday as the two Super Bowl 50 entrants were determined.
AMERICAN FOOTBALL CONFERENCE:
At Denver:
Quarterback Peyton Manning threw two touchdown (21 and 12 yards) passes to tight end Owen Daniels and Brandon McManus, who converted both extra point kicks, added a pair of field goals (52 and 31 yards) as the Denver Broncos stopped a New England game-tying two-point conversion attempt in the final seconds and held off the defending Super Bowl champions Patriots 20-18 at home for their eighth AFC championship, enabling them to tie the number of Super Bowl appearances at eight (the same as Dallas, Pittsburgh, and New England).
NATIONAL FOOTBALL CONFERENCE:
At Charlotte, North Carolina:
Quarterback Cam Newton became the first QB in NFL playoff history to throw for more than three hundred yards (335 in fact, while throwing for two touchdowns, one each to Corey Brown [86 yards] and Devin Funchess [five]) and run for two touchdowns (one and twelve yards) as the Carolina Panthers claimed their second NFC crown (their first in 12 years) by devouring the visiting Arizona Cardinals 49-15.
The Broncos and Panthers will face off in Super Bowl 50, which will take place at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California on Sunday, February 7 (3:30 Pacific Time, CBS).
Denver will be aiming for their third Super Bowl crown; Carolina, their first.
