Scottie Wilbekin scored 21 points as the top-seeded (both in the region and overall) Florida Gators (34-2) coasted to a 61-45 win over the ninth-seeded Pittsburgh Panthers (26-10) to reach the Sweet 16.
At Buffalo, New York:
Dyshawn Pierre scored 14 points while Jordan Sibert converted a key three-point shot with 47.7 second remaining in regulation as the eleventh-seeded Dayton Flyers (26-10) advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 30 years with a 55-53 upset of third-seeded Syracuse Orangemen (28-6).

NCAA East: Tar Heels Survive Scare From Friars; Memphis, Cavs, Cyclones (Who Lose Georges Niang To Injury) Advance
Four games were played on Friday in the East Region of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament as second-round action continued.
At Raleigh, North Carolina:
In the opening game of two played at PNC Arena, Michael Dixon, Jr. scored 19 points (four of them on as many free throws in the final ten seconds) as the #8-seeded Memphis Tigers (24-9) held off the ninth-seeded George Washington Colonials (24-9) 71-66, despite 21 points from GW's Isaiah Armwood.
In the nightcap, Anthony Gill scored 17 points as the top-seeded Virginia Cavaliers (29-6) survived a scare from #16-seeded Coastal Carolina (21-13) 70-59. The Cavaliers overcame a five-point halftime lead for the Chanticleers, outscoring the Big South champions who were playing their first NCAA Tournament match since 1993 40-24 in the second half. Virginia will take on Memphis in Raleigh on Sunday.
At San Antonio:
In the first of two East Regional contests played at the AT&T Center, Marcus Paige scored 19 points while James Michael McAdoo added 16 (to go with his ten rebounds), hitting two free throws in the final 3.5 seconds as the #6-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels (24-9) narrowly avoided the upset bug that knocked out arch-rival Duke by holding off #11-seeded Providence (23-12) 79-77. Had the Tar Heels lost, it would have been the first time since 1979 that UNC and the Blue Devils lost in the NCAA Tournament on the same day. Bryce Cotton paced the Friars with 38 points.
In the nightcap, the #3-seeded Iowa State Cyclones (27-7) ultimately ran away from #14-seeded North Carolina Central (28-6) 93-75. Unfortunately for the Cyclones, Georges Niang, who scored 24 points, will miss the rest of the tournament with a broken bone in his right foot. Jeremy Ingram paced the Eagles (who made their NCAA Tournament debut) with 28 points as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champs saw their 20-game winning streak snapped. The Cyclones will get their shot at North Carolina in San Antonio on Sunday.

In the opening match at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena, Wesley Saunders scored 12 points as the #12-seeded Harvard Crimson (27-4) knocked off the #5-seeded Cincinnati Bearcats (27-7) 61-57 for their second-ever NCAA Tournament victory.
In the second contest, the fourth-seeded Michigan State Spartans (27-8) ousted the #13-seeded Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens (25-10) 93-78. Adreian Payne scored a career-high 41 points to pace the Spartans, who will face Harvard on Saturday in Spokane.

The opening round of the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament concluded with two games played on Wednesday.
In the opener, Chris Eversley scored 19 points as the Cal Poly Mustangs (14-19) became the first team in 59 years with at least 19 defeats to win an NCAA Tournament game, 81-69 over Texas Southern (17-15), despite 38 points from the Tigers' Aaric Murray. Now coming off a victory in their NCAA Tournament debut, the Mustangs will head into a Midwest Regional Friday contest against top-seeded---------and undefeated----------Wichita State in St. Louis.

Men's Hoops: Ducks Have Support In Final Pre-NCAA Tourney AP Poll
The Oregon Ducks had support in both the Associated Press poll that were released on Monday, the eve of the start of this year's NCAA Tournament (the Ducks take on BYU this Thursday). The Ducks would be ranked #33 in the AP poll. What support they had in last week's USA Today/Coaches poll evaporated, though. As has been the case all season long, there was no support in either poll for the Beaver State's other men's Division I basketball teams.

Richard Coogan, Actor Who Played Original Captain Video, R.I.P.
Richard Coogan, the Broadway actor best remembered to the first generation of network television viewers for his portrayal of the title role in the DuMont Network series Captain Video and His Video Rangers, passed away on Wednesday at Los Angeles of natural causes.
Mr. Coogan was roughly a month away from what would have been his 100th birthday.
During 1949 and 1950 (before leaving the series, to be replaced by Al Hodge), Dick played the role of the leader of a group of fighters for truth and justice in the distant future.
Unhappy with the cheap sets and low budgets, Dick left the series in December, 1950 and was replaced by Al Hodge, who had been radio's original Britt Reid (The Green Hornet). Mr. Hodge played the role for the rest of the series' run, which ended in 1955 as the DuMont network was falling apart. Al became so identified with the character that he never was able to leave the role.
As for Mr. Coogan, he did star in one other series, The Californians.
On this NBC Western, which ran from 1957-59, Dick appeared as US Marshall Matthew Wayne, which viewers thought was a clone of Gunsmoke's Marshall Matt Dillon.
Later in life, Dick was becoming best known as a professional golfer and golf instructor.

Pac-12 Tournament: Utes, Buffs, Ducks (Who Oust Beavers), Cardinal Advance To Quarterfinals
Four games were played on Wednesday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in suburban Las Vegas as the Pacific-12 Conference Men's Basketball Tournament commenced.
In the opening contest, the eighth-seeded Utah Runnin' Utes (21-10) defeated the ninth-seeded Washington Huskies (17-15) 67-61 to advance to Thursday's quarterfinal round----and an encounter with top-seeded Arizona.

ANOTHER SEASON, ANOTHER NCAA BERTH FOR ZAGS; GONZAGA DOWNS BYU FOR WCC TOURNAMENT TITLE

Sam Dower, Jr. scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and the top-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs (28-6) defeated the BYU Cougars (23-11) 75-64 on Tuesday night to win the West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament championship at the Orleans Arena, their 13th such title. The Bulldogs qualified for their sixteenth consecutive NCAA Tournament, despite 24 points from teh Cougars' Tyler Haws.

Ducks Reclaim Support In AP And Coaches Polls
Following their regular season-concluding weekend home sweep of the Pac-12 Conference's Arizona schools, the Oregon Ducks picked up votes in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls. In the former, the Ducks would be ranked #28 while in the latter, they would be ranked #29. As has been the case all season long, all of the other three Beaver State men's NCAA Division I basketball programs were left with nary any support in either poll.

Geoff Edwards, Veteran TV Game Show Host, R.I.P.
Geoff Edwards, best remembered as the host of several television game shows in the 1970s and 1980s, most notoriously two Chuck Barris-produced revivals of Treasure Hunt, passed away on Wednesday at St. John's Medical Center in Santa Monica, California at age 83.
Mr. Edwards passed away from complications from pneumonia.
From 1973 to 1977, Geoff hosted the first of two revivals of the old 1950s Jan Murray game show Treasure Hunt, which was titled The New Treasure Hunt. He also hosted the second revival, simply entitled Treasure Hunt during 1981 and 1982.

Jim Lange, Original Host Of TV's "Dating Game," R.I.P.
Jim Lange, a veteran radio disc jockey who became best remembered for his stint as the orginal host of the television game show The Dating Game, passed away this past Tuesday at his Mill Valley, California home at age 81 after suffering a heart attack.
In 1965, producer Chuck Barris hired Mr. Lange to host a newly-created TV game show entitled The Dating Game.
Known for his voluminous hair, velvet tuxedos, and boyish charm, Jim would host the program, in ABC Network (both daytime and prime time) and local syndication versions into the 1980s.

The show’s premise was simple: a contestant, usually a young woman, read scripted questions, awash in gentle double entendres, to three men. (Q. “If you were a holiday, how would you like to be celebrated?” A. “I would love to be Arbor Day, and be potted.”)
The men, known as Bachelors Nos. 1, 2 and 3, were seated behind a screen, visible to the audience but not to the contestant. (“And h-e-e-r-e they are!,” Mr. Lange ritually intoned on introducing them to viewers.)
Based on their answers, the contestant chose one of them to be her date on a romantic getaway, furnished by the show. In a nod to the mores of the times — or, more accurately, to those of a somewhat earlier time — the trips were chaperoned, sometimes by Mr. Lange, sometimes by Mr. Barris.
On some episodes, the roles were reversed, with a male contestant interrogating three bachelorettes. On others, celebrities — among them a juvenile Michael Jackson and a youthful, heavily muscledArnold Schwarzenegger — took the contestant’s chair.
In an era in which a woman was expected to wait for a man to ask her out, “The Dating Game” billed itself as a blow for progress.
