Gladys Horton, Lead Singer of The Marvelettes, R. I. P.

Gladys Horton, the lead singer of the Marvelettes, whose 1961 recording of "Please Mr. Postman" became the first #1 pop hit in the history of Motown Records, passed away on Wednesday at Sherman Oaks, California at age 65.  She did not recover after having suffered a stroke.

Here is a 1960s kinescope of the Marvelettes' performance of "Mr. Postman" on a syndicated Detroit-based musical-variety television program entitled Teen Town.

Time For Old Time Rhythm And Blues

Here are The "5" Royales with a big R & B hit from 1953, "Help Me Somebody," which was released on Apollo Records.  The record spent five weeks atop Billboard magazine's Rhythm and Blues charts.

Here is Peter Rabbitears, whose voices sounded like it was done by one of the blokes who did Woody Woodpecker's voice back in the 1940s.  This was a promo for the ABC Television Network which aired in 1957.

Judge For Yourself

Here are two 1957 recordings of the song, "Silhouettes," written by two New York City-based independent producers, Frank Slay and Bob Crewe.  The two writers released the original recording, by the Rays, a rhythm and blues vocal quartet from Brooklyn (with lead vocalist Hal Miller, tenors Walter Ford and David Jones, and bass singer (NOT the same named trumpeter-bandleader of the same name) Harry James, on their own small record label, XYZ.  The recording would be released nationally by Cameo Records, based in Philadelphia.  The Rays' recording would be a big hit in both rhythm and blues and pop, winding up at number three on Billboard's R & B and pop Top 100 charts.

Here now is the Diamonds' (lead singer Dave Somerville, tenor Ted Kowalski, baritone Phil Levitt, and bass Bill Reed) cover recording on Mercury Records.  Their recording actually finished higher on Billboard's R&B charts than it did on the Top 100 pop survey (#6 to #10). Packers and Steelers Win Their Way To Super Bowl XLV

The two entrants in next month's Super Bowl became known on Sunday.

At Chicago:

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers ran for a touchdown and made a saving tackle on an interception return, defensive lineman B. J. Raji intercepted a pass 18 yards for what turned out to be the game-winning score, and defensive back Sam Shields came up with two interceptions of his own as the Green Bay Packers held off the Chicago Bears 21-14 to win the National Football Conference championship.  The Packers will be playing in their fifth Super Bowl (their first in thirteen years).  Green Bay had won on three of their four previous tries.

At Pittsburgh:

The Pittsburgh Steelers scored two touchdowns in a span of 47 seconds in the second quarter (a Ben Roethlisberger 2-yard run for a score followed by a 19-yard fumble recovery for a score by William Gay) and then held on for a 24-19 win over the New York Jets in the American Football Conference title game.  The Steelers will be playing in their eighth Super Bowl (tying the record set by the Dallas Cowboys) and have won an NFL record six Super Bowl titles in their previous seven attempts.

Super Bowl XLV will take place on Sunday, February 6 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.  Kickoff is slated for 3:30 PM Pacific Standard Time.  The contest will be carried on the Fox Television Network.

Jack LaLanne, R. I. P.

Jack LaLanne, described as the founding father of the modern fitness movement, and who is also best remembered for his obsession with grueling workouts and good nutrition, passed away on Sunday at his Morro Bay, California or respiratory failure due to pneumonia at the age of 96.

Time For An R&B Classic

Here is a classic rhythm and blues recording from 1951 as the Dominoes, which included Clyde McPhatter, sing "Sixty Minute Man."  It was recorded on Federal Records, which was a subsidiary of Cincinnati-based King Records.

Here, from 1958, is one of the earliest commercials for Post Alpha Bits cereal.  General Foods, which sponsored The Danny Thomas Show on CBS, introduced the cereal on an episode of Danny's show.

Goes great with those Certs mints.  Here's a commercial from circa 1959 for the Certs Candy Breath Mints.  Turns out years later that Restyn, which was that special ingredient in Certs, turned out to be vegetable oil.

Don Kirshner, R. I. P.

Don Kirshner, the songwriter and rock and roll producer who managed such songwriting talent as Neil Sedaka, Carole King, Howard Greenfield and many others while providing music for The Monkees' TV series, including "I'm A Believer," passed away on Monday at Boca Raton, Florida from Heart Failure at age 77.
