In the final collegiate football bowl contest prior to the January 11 National Championship game between Clemson and Alabama, quarterback Skyler Howard threw for a game-record 532 yards and hit David Sills with a 15-yard touchdown pass (his fifth) with 2:19 remaining in regulation as the West Virginia Mountaineers (8-5) defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils (6-7) 43-42 in the Cactus Bowl.

Liberty Bowl: Aggies Win Wild One Over Mountaineers
At Memphis, Tennessee:
Kyle Allen threw for four touchdowns and ran for another on Monday as the Texas A&M Aggies (8-5) held off the West Virginia Mountaineers (7-6) 45-37 in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. This was the 50th edition to be played in Memphis, the series actually started in Philadelphia in 1959, then moved to Atlantic City in 1964 before moving to its' current home in 1965.

Prince-Tyson Gulley ran for 217 yards and three touchdowns as Syracuse (8-5) mauled West Virginia (7-6) 38-14 in Saturday's Pinstripe Bowl, played on a snow-covered field at Yankee Stadium.
The game was the Orangemen's Big East Conference finale as they will join the Atlantic Coast Conference next season.

Quarterback Geno Smith threw for a bowl-game-record six touchdowns, four of them (also tying a bowl game record) to Tavon Austin, as the #23 West Virginia Mountaineers (10-3) demolished the #15 Clemson Tigers (10-4) 70-33 in Wednesday's Orange Bowl game. The 70 points scored by the Mountaineers broke the regulation record for most points scored in a bowl game that was set only six days ago by the Baylor Bears in their Alamo Bowl win over Washington.

Jermaine Thomas ran for two touchdowns as Florida State (7-6) scored 20 unanswered points in defeating West Virginia (9-4) 33-21 in Friday's Konica Minolta Gator Bowl. The game was Bobby Bowden's finale as the Seminoles head coach as FSU completed their 33rd consecutive winning season. Bobby's record at Florida State: 389-129-4.
