Stanley Cup Playoffs: Bruins Overcome Three-Goal Deficit, Oust Leafs In OT, Advance To Take On Rangers (Who Clobber Caps In Series Decider)

The opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs concluded on Monday with the seventh and deciding game of each of two Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.

At Boston:

Patrice Bergeron scored twice, once at 19:09 of the third period to tie the game, then, at 6:05 into overtime with the game and series winner as the Boston Bruins overcame a 4-1 third-period deficit and defeated the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 in the deciding game of their opening-round series. The Bruins (who won the series four games to three) became the first team in NHL history to win a seventh-game of a playoff series after trailing by three goals in the third period.

At Washington:

Aaron Asham, Taylor Pyatt, Michael Del Zotto, Ryan Callahan, and Mats Zuccarello each scored a goal while Henrik Lundqvist turned aside all 35 shots as the New York Rangers ran roughshod over the Washington Capitals 5-0 in the deciding contest of their first-round series and took out the Southeast Division regular-season champs four games to three to advance to the second round of the playoffs.

The Rangers and Bruins, two closed-circuit-era clubs, will battle it out in an Eastern Conference semifinal series, which is slated to start at Boston on Thursday night.
