The Stanley Cup Playoffs continued Wednesday night.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Montreal:

Alex Ovechkin scored twice as the Washington Capitals defeated the Montreal Canadians 6-3 in game four to lead their conference quarterfinal series three games to one.

At Boston:

In the longest game of the playoffs thus far, Miroslav Satan's power-play goal at 7:41 of the second overtime period lifted the Boston Bruins to a 3-2 come-from-behind home win in game four over the Buffalo Sabres.  The Bruins now lead their opening-round series three games to one.

WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Los Angeles:

A four-goal third period (Mikael Samuelsson, Sami Salo, Henrik Sundin, and Ryan Kesler) enabled the Vancouver Canucks to defeat the Los Angeles Kings on the road in game four 6-4 and even their best-of-seven series at two games apiece.

NBA Playoffs: Magic Up 2-0; Spurs Top Mavs In Dallas To Square Series At One Game Apiece

Two games were played Wednesday night as the NBA Playoffs continued.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Orlando, Florida:

Vince Carter scored 19 points and Dwight Howard added 15 as the Orlando Magic defeated the visiting Charlotte Bobcats 92-77 to lead their conference quarterfinal series against the playoff debutantes two games to none.

WESTERN CONFERENCE:


At Dallas:


Tim Duncan scored 25 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, and Manu Ginobili scored 23 as the San Antonio Spurs squared their series with the Dallas Mavericks at one game apiece with a 102-88 triumph on the road in game two.

NBA Playoffs: Hawks, Celtics (Sans K. G.), And Lakers Take 2-0 Leads; Recharged Suns Scorch Blazers To Even Series

The NBA Playoffs continued Tuesday with four games.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Atlanta:

Joe Johnson scored 27 points while Josh Smith came close to a triple double (21 points, 14 rebounds, 9 assists) as the Atlanta Hawks took a two-games-to-none lead in their conference quarterfinal series with a 96-86 game-two home win over the Milwaukee Bucks.

At Boston:

Even without the suspended Kevin Garnett, the Boston Celtics manhandled the visiting Miami Heat 106-77 in game two to take a two-games-to-none series lead.  Ray Allen scored 25 points to pace the Celts and Glen Davis added 23.


WESTERN CONFERENCE:


At Phoenix:

Jason Richardson scored 29 points, Grant Hill tallied 20 (making 10 of 11 from the field), and Steve Nash registered 16 rebounds to go with his 13 points as the Phoenix Suns salvaged a split of their first two series games at home with a 119-90 beatdown of the Portland Trail Blazers.


At Los Angeles:

The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder 95-92 in game two to take a two-games-to-none lead in their best-of-seven series.  Kobe Bryant scored 39 points to pace the Lakers.   Pau Gasol added 25 points and 12 rebounds for Los Angeles.  Kevin Durant scored 32 to lead the Thunder.

Sidney Crosby scored twice during a five-goal second period as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Ottawa Senators 7-4 on the road in game four to take a three-games-to-one lead in their conference quarterfinal series.

At Philadelphia:

Jeff Carter scored two power-play goals and goalie Brian Boucher stopped 30 of 31 shots as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the visiting New Jersey Devils 4-1 in game four to lead their opening-round playoff series three games to one.


WESTERN CONFERENCE:


At Detroit:


Goalie Jimmy Howard stopped all 29 shots and Henrik Zetterberg scored twice as the Detroit Red Wings blanked the visiting Phoenix Coyotes 3-0 to square their first-round playoff series at two games apiece.

At Nashville:

David Legwand scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and goalie Pekka Rinne stopped 26 of 27 shots as the Nashville Predators to a two-games-to-one series lead for the first time in franchise history with a 4-1 home win in game three over the Chicago Blackhawks.

At Denver:

Joe Pavelski scored at 10:24 of overtime, and Evgeni Nabokov stopped 33 of 34 shots as the San Jose Sharks squared their series with the Colorado Avalanche at two games apiece with a 2-1 road win in game four.  Dan Boyle, whose unfortunate blunder in the overtime period of game three cost San Jose that contest, scored the Sharks' first goal on the power play in the first period.

Clint Clobber, Gaston Le Crayon, John Doormat, Flebus, and Simon Bar Sinister (Amongst Others), R. I. P.

Legendary New York voice artist and local television personality Allen Swift passed away this past Sunday at age 86.  

He did various cartoon voices as King Leonardo's trusted aide Odie Cologne, the villainous Simon Bar Sinister (on the old Underdog television show in the 1960s), and such characters as DeWitt Clinton (Clint) Clobber, superintendent and sanitation engineer (janitor) of the Flamboyant Arms, rubbery-limbed French artist Gaston Le Crayon, eternally-henpecked John Doormat, and happy nebish Flebus in various  series of theatrically-produced cartoons for Terrytoons during the Gene Deitch era, made between 1956 and 1958.
 

Mr. Swift also took over as the voice of Howdy Doody during the year (1954-55) that Buffalo Bob Smith was absent from the Peanut Gallery after he suffered his massive and nearly fatal heart attack.

Allen also did voice work for the MGM Tom and Jerry cartoons that ex-Terrytoons supervising director Gene Deitch directed at his studio in what was then Czechoslovakia during 1961 and 1962.

For years, he also hosted a local cartoon show that was seen on local television in New York City.

Here's Allen at work, doing the voices in "Flebus" a Terrytoons cartoon made in New Rochelle, New York that was originally released theatrically in CinemaScope by 20th Century Fox.  This is a 1960s TV print.  The cartoon was first directed by Ernest Pintoff (who wrote and designed it) , then completed by Gene Deitch, with animation by New York legend Jim Tyer and music by Phil Scheib (actually, Ernest composed the music, but dut to contractual commitment, Phil was credited on screen).

NBA Playoffs: LeBron Paces Cavs Over Bulls; Wounded Jazz Even Series

The NBA Playoffs continued with two Monday contests.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Cleveland:

LeBron James scored 40 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers downed the Chicago Bulls 112-102 at home to take a two-games-to-none advantage in their best-of-seven conference quarterfinal series.

WESTERN CONFERENCE:

Deron Williams scored 33 points and had 14 assists, and Carlos Boozer added 20 points and 15 rebounds as the injury-plagued Utah Jazz seized the home-court advantage as they evened, at one game apiece,  their opening-round series with the Denver Nuggets with a 114-111 road win in game two.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Bruins, Caps, And Kings Take 2-1 Series Leads

Three games dotted the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup Playoff schedule on Monday.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Boston:

Goals from Dennis Wideman and Patrice Bergeron enabled the Boston Bruins to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 in game three of their best-of-seven series as the Bruins now have taken the series lead at two games to one.

At Montreal:

A four-goal second period (Boyd Gordon [shorthanded], Brooks Laich, Eric Fehr, and Alex Ovechkin) powered the Washington Capitals to a 5-1 game-three road beatdown of the Montreal Canadiens.  The Caps now have a 2-1 lead in the series and have reclaimed the home-ice advantage.

WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Los Angeles:


Three power-play goals, two by Michal Handzus (both in the second period) and one by Drew Doughty carried the Los Angeles Kings to a 5-3 home win over the Vancouver Canucks in game three of their best-of-seven series, which the Kings now lead two games to one.

At Philadelphia:

Daniel Carcillo scored the game winner at 3:35 of overtime as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the visiting New Jersey Devils 2-1 to lead their series two games to one.

At Ottawa:

Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Ottawa Senators 4-2 on the road in game three to take a two-games-to-one lead in their series.

WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Detroit:

Goals from Sami Lepisto, Wojtek Wolski, Petr Prucha, and Radim Vrbata paced the Phoenix Coyotes to a 4-2 road win over the Detroit Red Wings in game three of their opening round series, enabling the Coyotes to take the lead in their series, two games to one. 

At Chicago:

Dave Bolland and Patrick Kane each scored a goal as the Chicago Blackhawks evened their series with the Nashville Predators with a 2-0 home shutout win.  Goalie Antti Niemi stopped all 23 Nashville shots to become the first Chicago netminder to post a playoff shutout since Ed Belfour in 1996.

At Denver:

Ryan O'Reilly was credited with the game-winning goal at 51 seconds of overtime thanks to a defensive blunder as the Colorado Avalanche took game three of their series with the San Jose Sharks, 1-0 at home.  The Avalanche now lead that series, two games to one.

NBA Playoffs: Blazers Take Series Opener At Phoenix; Lakers Start Title Defense On Right Track; Magic Spoil Bobcats Debut; Mavs Top Spurs

Four best-of-seven conference quarterfinal series got under way Sunday as the NBA Playoffs continued.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Orlando, Florida:

Jameer Nelson scored 32 points (24 in the first half) as the Orlando Magic defeated the visiting Charlotte Bobcats 98-89 in game one of their best-of-seven series, spoiling the Bobcats' first-ever playoff game.

WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Los Angeles:

Kobe Bryant scored 23 points, Pau Gasol added 19 while grabbing 13 rebounds, and Andrew Bynum, in his first game in nearly a month, scored 13 more, as the Los Angeles Lakers began their NBA title defense with a 87-79 home win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the opening game of their conference quarterfinal series.  Kevin Durant, in his first playoff game, paced the Thunder with 24 points with Russell Westbrook adding 23.

At Dallas:

Dirk Nowitzki made 12 of 14 shots from the field as he scored 36 points as the Dallas Mavericks took their series opener at home with the San Antonio Spurs 100-94.

At Phoenix, Arizona:



Andre Miller scored 31 points (and made all 10 free throws) and LaMarcus Aldridge added 22 as the Portland Trail Blazers took the opening game of their best-of-seven series 105-100 on the road over the Phoenix Suns.

The National Basketball Association playoffs commenced on Saturday with four games.

LeBron James scored 24 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers took the opening game of their conference quarterfinal series with the Chicago Bulls 96-83 at home.

At Atlanta:

Joe Johnson scored 22 points as the Atlanta Hawks  built up a 22-point halftime lead, then coasted to a game-one 102-92 home win over the Milwaukee Bucks.

At Boston:

Paul Pierce scored 16 points and Kevin Garnett added 15 to offset Dwayne Wade's 26 at the Boston Celtics defeated the visiting Miami Heat 85-76 at home in their series opener.

Erik Karlsson and Chris Kelly each scored a second-period power play goal as the Ottawa Senators took game one of their opening-round playoff series on the road, 5-4 over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

At Indianapolis:

The Duke Blue Devils won their fourth NCAA men's basketball national championship, defeating Butler 61-59 at Lucas Oil Stadium Monday night. Kyle Singler (named Most Outstanding Player) scored 19 points and grabbed 9 rebounds for the Blue Devils.  Jon Scheyer had 15 points and Nolan Smith added 13 for Duke.  Gordon Heyward (whose three-point shot from mid-court at the buzzer did not drop in) and Shelvin Mack each scored 12 points for the hometown Bulldogs.

It's Butler Vs. Duke For All The Marbles

At Indianapolis:

The national semifinals of the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship took place on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

In the opener, Gordon Hayward scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds at Butler edged out Michigan State 52-50.  The Bulldogs will make their first-ever appearance in the National Championship game this coming Monday.

In the nightcap, John Scheyer scored 23 points, Kyle Singler added 21, and Nolan Smith contributed 19 more as Duke overpowered West Virginia 78-57 to make it to the title game for the first time since 2001.

Where's Allan Sherman?

In this 1956 clip from The Lawrence Welk Show, as aired on ABC, here are the Champagne Music Makers performing "Dance of the Hours,"  best remembered to a generation of listeners as the melody used by Allan Sherman seven years later for his hit comedy recording "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah."

John Forsythe, R.I.P.

John Forsythe, the actor best remembered to television viewers for his portrayal of Blake Carrington on the 1980s ABC television series Dynasty, as well as the heard but never seen boss to Charlie's Angels from 1976-81, and as the star of Bachelor Father, who brought up his teenage niece after her parents lost their lives in an accident, passed away on Thursday at Santa Ynez, California at age 92.

His publicist said that Mr. Forsythe had been suffering from complications from pneumonia following a year-long battle with cancer.
