Joe Feeney, R.I.P.

It was reported by family members that former long-time regular on The Lawrence Welk Show, Nebraska-born Irish tenor Joe Feeney passed away this past Wednesday at age 76.

Joe was a regular on the Welk show from 1957 until 1982, when Lawrence pulled the plug on the show. The top vidcap was from September 5, 1959, the middle vidcap was from February 22, 1964, and the one in color, with pianist Frank Scott, was from the October 23, 1965 show.

My mom always enjoyed listening to Joe singing on the Welk show.

Maybe I Should Think...............

Before buying any more Lonely Planet books.

Thomas Kohnstamm also claims in a new book that he accepted free travel, in contravention of the company's policy.

His revelations have rocked the travel publisher, which sells more than six million guides a year.

Mr Kohnstamm, whose book is titled Do Travel Writers Go To Hell?, said yesterday that he had worked on more than a dozen books for Lonely Planet, including its titles on Brazil, Colombia, the Caribbean, Venezuela, Chile and South America.

In one case, he said he had not even visited the country he wrote about.

"They didn't pay me enough to go Colombia,'' he said.

"I wrote the book in San Francisco. I got the information from a chick I was dating - an intern in the Colombian Consulate.

"They don't pay enough for what they expect the authors to do.''

Maybe this author should win the Janet Cooke book award, if you know what I mean.

A reported crowd of 115,300, the largest ever to watch a baseball game, showed up last night at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to watch the Boston Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-4 in an exhibition game. This is part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Dodgers' first year in Los Angeles.

The Coliseum was their home from 1958 to 1961, before they moved to their permanent home at Chevez Revine (Dodger Stadium) in 1962.

The commercials for Marx Toys were usually narrated by Claude Kirschner, who was the original ringmaster on the old ABC TV show Super Circus (1948-56), which originated from Chicago. By the end of 1955, the show was moved to New York, and the entire cast, including Mr. Kirschner and the show's beloved buxom blonde, Mary Hartline, were replaced, with Jerry Colonna becoming the new ringmaster. The show went off the air in 1956.

According to a report that came out late Saturday on TV Newser, veteran anchorwoman Laurie Dhue has left Fox News Channel. It appears that Laurie and the network failed to come to terms on a new contract. The University of North Carolina graduate had been with FNC for 7 1/2 years and will be sorely missed.

Let me begin by writing that what Don Imus said last week on his syndicated radio show, simulcast of MSNBC, concerning the Rutgers women's basketball team, was absolutely stupid and obnoxious. Nevertheless, with the cancellation this past Thursday by CBS Radio of Mr. Imus' radio show, the day after MSNBC pulled the plug on its' I-Man simulcasts, with both versions being hit by advertiser defections, there seems to be a new chill in the air as far as what you can say over the airwaves are concerned. Meanwhile, you still have garbage eminating from crap---uh----Rap "Music Artists" whom I will not mention here that are violent and degrading that is still being allowed on the air, far worse than the brain-dead and inaccurate descriptions Don said on his now-defunct radio show about the Rutgers women's basketball team.

It's been a busy week for Fox News Channel's very own Uma Pemmaraju, who on Saturday, hosted the 11:00 AM to 12 Noon hour (Pacific Time) of Fox News Live. This morning she hosted a 90-minute block (7:00-8:30 AM Pacific Time) of FNL. You'll see more of Uma later today when she's scheduled to host the 11AM to 12 Noon (Pacific Time) hour of FNL.

The Center Chair On "Fox & Friends:" For Blondes Only?

Is it me, or has Fox News mandated that only blonde females sit in the center chair on the various editions of Fox & Friends? Today, Page Hopkins was in the center chair (sitting in for Gretchen Carlson, who is off all week). This past weekend, Ainsley Earhardt, a newcomer from KENS-TV in San Antonio ( who usually does overnight news updates Friday night/Saturday morning to Sunday night/Monday morning) , sat in the center chair. The previous two weekends, Courtney Friel sat in the center chair (except for Sunday of last week, when Page Hopkins did the honors). Is there a policy at Fox News that mandates thet only blondes sit in the center chair during the airing of Fox & Friends?

Nothing To Write Home About (Except For Uma)

Courtney Friel's weekend at the center chair on Fox & Friends Weekend (in between Greg Kelly and Kelly Wright) was not really anything to write home about. Then again, what else could you say about someone who posed in Maxim magazine and had hosted TV coverage of poker tournaments. Just about the only real highlights of the weekend were provided by proven and experienced professional Uma Pemmaraju (pictured here, by herself, and with the F&FW trio) on Sunday with her headline updates, before she began hosting 90 minutes of Fox News Live.

One extra note: Upon being recruited for Fox & Friends Weekend, Courtney Friel (apparently at FNC's behest) removed the swimwear pictures from her website.

This Is A News Network?

Today marked the debut of one-time Maxim model Courtney Friel in the center chair on the weekend edition of Fox & Friends. I really did not bother to watch the show today. I was hoping after Kiran Chetry got the boot from Fox News that they would send a talented professional to fill the center chair at least until Alisyn Camerota returned from maternity leave. While it is true that this newcomer has a BA in political science and broadcast journalism and had worked at stations in Palm Springs and San Diego and at Court TV, I do not recall seeing swimwear pics of Jane Skinner, Laurie Dhue, or the departed Donna Fiducia on their web sites, though in the newcomer's case, her swimwear pics were taken down from her website yesterday, probably at FNC's behest. What highlights there may be on tomorrow's telecast would likely come from Uma Pemmaraju's news updates (substituting for Page Hopkins) . Now here's someone who should be seating at the center chair (the same might be said for Jane Skinner, Laurie Dhue, Lauren Green, Patti
Ann Browne, Molly Henneberg, you name it) . Uma's a true professional, who is scheduled to host Fox News Live with Eric Shawn during the 7-9AM Pacific Time period tomorrow morning.

Good News For Uma's Fans

According to the Fox News website, Uma Pemmaraju is scheduled to host Fox News Live this coming Sunday, starting at 7:00 AM Pacific Live. She'll likely host the first half-hour solo, then co-pilot the next 60 minutes with Eric Shawn.

Here's a chance to see a talented professional like Uma at work.

No Sad Loss

Looks like we have seen the last of Kiran Chetry on the Fox News Channel. Negotiations between Fox News and the erstwhile female headliner of the weekend version of Fox & Friends (as well as being a regular on Fox & Friends 1st , according to a report on Mediabistro's TV Newser web site had broken down.

Weekday Changes At FNC Beginning February 12

Here are some changes coming up as far as the weekday programming at Fox News Channel is concerned--all times Pacific:

Bill Hemmer (moving from 9AM weekdays) will be hosting the 6-8AM timeslot along with Megyn Kelly, with the two-hour block to be titled America's Newsroom.

E.D. Hill is moving from 7AM to 8AM.

Jon Scott is moving from 6AM to 9AM.

Those two hours would carry the Fox News Live label.

Programming from 10AM afterwards will remain intact.

On this past Sunday, December 3, Uma Pemmaraju hosted a 90-minute block of Fox News Live, piloting solo the first 30 minutes, then splitting the next hour with Eric Shawn. Perhaps someone at FNC DID listen. Great job, Uma!

What Fox News has done in recent months with Uma Pemmaraju is nothing short of scandalous, and this is an outrage and a disgrace. Why won't they let this talented journalist host ANY programming on FNC? Is she currently working there without a contract---or has she been notified that her contract isn't being renewed? It seems that Uma is now being treated at Fox News as if she were a parasite. It appears that the Fox News Brain Trust is willing to win at all costs---even to the career detriment of some of its' on-air talent, such as Uma. Gretchen Carlson, who had hosted the two-hour Fox News Live block formerly warmed over by Brigitte Quinn is joining the cast of Fox & Friends this coming Monday. She is, in effect, swapping dayparts with E.D. Hill, who had been one of the hosts of F&F since the show's beginnings in 1998. E.D. will, beginning this Monday as well, be seen anchoring Fox News Live from 7-9AM Pacific Time. Remember that back in 1998 and 1999, E.D. hosted FNL's forerunner, Fox News Now.

New Gigs For Jane and Martha

Beginning Monday, September 25, Jane Skinner will begin her new regular hosting assignment as she replaces Martha MacCallum as anchorwoman for the 11AM to 12 Noon Pacific Time hour of Fox News Live. For Jane, it is a new hosting assignment that has been long in coming. As for Martha, she will host a new show on that same date, starting at 10Am Pacific Time entitled The Live Desk with Martha MacCallum, which in turn, is replacing DaySide, whose two headliners, Mike Jerrick and Juliet Huddy, are set to host a new midmorning show starting early next year on Fox owned-and-operated televsion stations. Some might say that DaySide never really recovered from last year's departure of Linda Vester, who left the show to go on extended maternity leave. They should have given that show to Uma Pemmaraju and/or Donna Fiducia instead of two teenagers masquerading as adults.

Over the past two or more weeks, higher-profile Fox News Channel talent like David Asman, Page Hopkins, Kiran Chetry, Gregg Jarrett, Patti Ann Browne, and Lauren Green, among others, along with freelancer Darby Dunn, have been doing FNC overnight news updates instead of Donna Fiducia and Carol Iovanna. Whether Donna and/or Carol may be on vacation, or assignment, or ended up with a contract that was not renewed remains to be seen.
