Stanley Cup Playoffs: Caps Finish Off Rangers; Bruins Beat Habs On 2OT To Go Up 3-2; Lightning Too Much For Penguins; Kings Stay Alive

Four games were played on Saturday as the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continued.


Eastern Conference:


At Pittsburgh:


Steven Stamkos and Simon Gagne each scored twice (the former scored once on the power play) while Pavel Kubina had two power play tallies of his own as the Tampa Bay Lightning avoided elimination by demolishing the Pittsburgh Penguins 8-2 on the road in game five, cutting the Pittsburgh advantage to three games to two.


At Washington:


Mike Green (PP), Alex Ovechkin, and Alexander Semin each scored once while Michal Neuvirth stopped 26 of 27 shots as the Washington Capitals eliminated the New York Rangers in five games following their 3-1 home triumph in the fifth game of their conference quarterfinal series.


At Boston:


Nathan Horton scored the winning goal at 9:03 of the second overtime period while Tim Thomas made 44 saves out of 45 shots as the Boston Bruins picked up the first win of their opening-round series by the home team, 2-1 over the Montreal Canadiens.


Western Conference:


At San Jose, California:


Jonathan Quick made a franchise playoff-record 51 saves while Wayne Simmonds, Kyle Clifford, and Dustin Penner each tallied once during a stretch of just over five minutes in the first period as the Los Angeles Kings avoided elimination with a 3-1 win on the road over the San Jose Sharks, who still lead their first-round series three games to two.
