Longtime Hall of Fame Detroit Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell, who called play-by-play for the Tigers during a period from 1960 until he retired in 2002, passed away from cancer on Tuesday night at his apartment at Novi, Michigan, near Detroit at age 92.
Mr. Harwell, who announced last September that he had inoperable cancer of the bile duct, had earlier broadcast games for the New York (baseball) Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers, and had called, by his own count, more than 8300 Major League baseball games, was awarded the Ford C. Frick award in 1981 by the Baseball Hall of Fame.
