So Much For Extinction

Looks like the Big 12 Conference (with 10 schools) is still very much alive.

A person with direct knowledge of discussions among the Big 12's remaining members said Texas is clear to set up its own TV network and keep all proceeds in exchange for remaining in the Big 12. The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because final details had not been worked out.
"Everybody is feeling much more confident the Big 12 is going to survive," the person said. "Everybody's going to be making more money."
All that talk about the Pac-16, the first super conference that would span from Seattle to the Lone Star state? Done.
"University of Texas president Bill Powers has informed us that the 10 remaining schools in the Big 12 Conference intend to stay together," Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott said in a statement. "We are excited about the future of the Pac-10 Conference and we will continue to evaluate future expansion opportunities under the guidelines previously set forth by our presidents and chancellors."
Powers declined comment when asked by the AP about details of the deal that kept Big 12 together.
The conference, born in 1996 when the Big 8 merged with members of the Southwest Conference, seemed to be falling apart last week when Nebraska (Big Ten) and Colorado (Pac-10) decided to leave over the next two years. Now the Big 12 its back, though there are still questions about how it will conduct its business.

This is really about television money, especially with the Longhorns, who would not have been able to set up their own cable TV network had they chosen to defect to the Pac 10.

NCAA To USC: Lack Of Institutional Control

That must have been some lack of institutional control, all right.

The NCAA cited USC for a lack of institutional control Thursday in its long-awaited report, which detailed numerous violations primarily involving Heisman Trophy-winning tailback Reggie Bush and men's basketball player O.J. Mayo.
The NCAA found that Bush, identified as a "former football student-athlete," was ineligible beginning at least by December 2004, a ruling that could open discussion on the revocation of the New Orleans Saints star's Heisman.
Members of the Heisman Trophy Trust have said they might review Bush's award if he was ruled ineligible by the NCAA.
The NCAA also ordered USC to vacate every victory in which Bush participated while ineligible. USC beat Oklahoma in the BCS championship game on Jan. 4, 2005, and won 12 games during Bush's Heisman-winning 2005 season, which ended with a loss to Texas in the Rose Bowl.

It's going to take a long time for the Trojans to recover.

The First Domino Falls

Ahead of what is expected to be Nebraska's defection to the Big Ten Conference, Colorado officially accepted their invitation Thursday to join the Pacific Ten Conference, becoming that outfit's first new member since Arizona and Arizona State came over from the Western Athletic Conference in 1978.  We may right now be seeing the dismemberment of the Big 12 Conference before our very eyes.

NBA Finals: Lakers Take Game Three In Boston To Go Up 2-1

At Boston:

The Los Angeles Lakers took game three of the NBA Finals Tuesday night on the road 91-84, taking a two-games-to-one advantage over the Boston Celtics in the process. Kobe Bryant scored 29 points while Derek Fisher added 16, scoring five buckets in the fourth quarter.  The series will resume Thursday night in Boston.

The Big 12 Conference: Rest In Pieces?

If this report from the Omaha Herald-Leader is true, then Nebraska is expected to defect to the Big Ten Conference.  If that's the case, Missouri could well follow, then watch at least five Southern Division (football) schools, meaning at least three Texas schools, the two Oklahoma schools and either Baylor or Colorado perhaps move to the Pacific 10 Conference.  This may very well mark the beginning of the end of the Big 12 Conference.  It is football money that is driving all these potential shifts in the collegiate football atmosphere.

Farewell, Wizard of Westwood

John Wooden, the legendary and iconic coach of the UCLA teams that won 10 NCAA men's basketball national championships (including seven in a row from 1967 to 1973) and, at one stretch, won 88 consecutive games, passed away on Friday night at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles from natural causes at the age of 99.

Coach Wooden had been hospitalized since May 26.

Over 27 years, he won 620 games, including the aforementioned 88 straight games, and coach several of the collegiate game's greatest players, such as Bill Walton and Lew Alcindor (now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar).

He was an All-American basketball player at Purdue University from 1930-32.

John Wooden would become the first person to be enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach.

The legendary Wizard of Westwood will never be forgotten.
