NBA Playoffs: Pistons, Rockets Stay Alive; Cavaliers Take 3-2 Series Lead

Three games were contested on Wednesday as the NBA Playoffs continued.

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

At Little Caesars Arena, Detroit:

Cade Cunningham scored 45 points (a Detroit franchise playoff record) while Tobias Harris added 23 (to go with eight rebounds) as the Detroit Pistons avoided elimination by defeating the visiting Orlando Magic 116-109 in game five of their conference quarterfinal series.

Paolo Banchero paced Orlando with 45 points while grabbing nine rebounds.

The Magic, up three games to two, can close out the Pistons with a game-six home victory on Friday (4:00 PM Pacific Time, Prime Video).

At Rocket Arena, Cleveland:

Evan Mobley and James Harden each scored 23 points and pulled in nine rebounds as the Cleveland Cavaliers outlasted the visiting Toronto Raptors 125-120 for a three-games-to-two conference quarterfinal series advantage.

R.J. Barrett paced Toronto with 25 points (to go with 12 rebounds) while Ja'Kobe Walker added 20. The Cavaliers can finish off the Raptors in Toronto on Friday (4:30 PM PDT, Prime Video).

WESTERN CONFERENCE:

At Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles:

Jabari Smith, Jr. scored 22 points while Tari Eason added 18 as the Houston Rockets, with all five starters scoring in double-figures, again staved off elimination by defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 99-93 on game five of their conference quarterfinal series.

The Lakers are paced by LeBron James' 25 points.

The Lakers will try again to finish this series by beating the Rockets in Houston in game six on Friday at 6:30 PM Pacific Time (Prime Video).

Although there have been several instances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and once, most famously, in Major League Baseball (in 2004, the Boston Red Sox overtook the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series), no team has ever come back from down three games to none to win a best-of-seven series in the NBA Playoffs.  The Houston Rockets are trying to change that.
