Both National League divisional playoff series were decided on Wednesday.
At Atlanta:
The St. Louis Cardinals scored ten runs in the first inning, tied for most runs in a single postseason inning, as they nuked the Atlanta Braves 10-1 in the fifth and deciding game of their divisional playoff series.
Jack Flaherty pitched six solid innings in which he surrendered one earned run, walked one batter, and struck out eight Braves batters as the Redbirds advanced to their first National League Championship Series since 2014.
At Los Angeles:
Howie Kendrick belted a tenth-inning grand-slam homer as the Washington Nationals erased what was once a two-run deficit to stun the Los Angeles 7-3 in the deciding game of their divisional playoff series.
The Nats will play in their first National League Championship Series since 1981 (when they were the Montreal Expos) when they face the Cardinals when the series opens in St. Louis on Friday.
The Nationals and the Seattle Mariners are the only active Major League Baseball clubs that have never advanced to the World Series.
