Pilots Grounded Again

At Moraga, California:

Malik Fitts scored 17 points on Thursday as the Saint Mary's Gaels (20-10 overall, 11-4 in WCC play) overpowered the visiting Portland Pilots (7-23, 0-15) 65-48.

Marvin Shaver, Jr. was the only Pilot who scored in double figures with 13 as Portland is now one of four Division I men's teams still winless in conference play (alongside the SEC's Vanderbilt, Tulane of the AAC, and Chicago State of the WAC).

Ducks Knock Off Sun Devils At Home

At Eugene, Oregon:

Louis King scored 19 points while Payton Pritchard added 18 on Thursday as the Oregon Ducks (16-12 overall, 7-8 in Pac-12 play) dominated the visiting Arizona State Sun Devils (19-9, 10-6) 79-51.

Vikings Try To Stay Hot Against Vandals In Idaho

At Moscow, Idaho:

Sal Nuhu block a shot, scooped up a defensive rebound, and hit two clutch free throws on Thursday as the Portland State Vikings (14-14 overall, 9-8 in Big Sky play) racked up their fifth straight victory, 67-65 on the road over the Idaho Vandals (4-14-, 1-16), who suffered their 15th straight defeat.

Holland Woods led the Vikes with 17 points.

Zona Uses Last-Second Basket To Knock Off Beavers

At Corvallis, Oregon:

Devonaire Doutrive scored the game-winning buzzer beater as the Arizona Wildcats (17-12 overall, 8-8 in Pac-12 play) knocked off the Oregon State Beavers (17-10, 9-6) 74-72 on the road on Thursday.

Brandon Randolph topped the Wildcats with 15 points while Tres Tinkle paced the Beavers with 24.

Pilots Drowned By Waves At Malibu

At Malibu, California:

Colbey Ross scored 23 points and dished out 10 assists on Saturday as the Pepperdine Waves (13-16 overall, 6-9 in WCC play) handed the visiting Portland Pilots (7-22, 0-14) their 15th straight defeat 86-80.

Josh McSwiggan topped the Pilots with 20 points.

Deante Strickland scored a career-high 20 points on Thursday night as the Portland State Vikings (12-14 overall, 7-8 in Big Sky play) racked up their fifth straight victory, 99-93 over the visiting Idaho State Bengals (9-16, 5-11), despite 24 points each from the guests' Jared Stutzman and Brandon Boyd.

Pilots Try To Pick Up First WCC Win At San Diego

At San Diego:

Isaiah Pineiro scored 22 points and pulled in 16 rebounds on Thursday as the San Diego Toreros (17-11 overall, 6-7 in WCC play) downed the visiting Portland Pilots (7-21, 0-13) 63-52.

The Pilots, one of six Division I schools still winless in conference play (alongside Vanderbilt [SEC], Tulane [American], San Jose State [Mountain West], California-Berkeley [Pac-12], and Chicago State[WAC]), have now dropped 14 straight games.

Stephen Thompson, Jr. scored 22 points as the Oregon State Beavers (16-8 overall, 8-4 in Pac-12 play) knocked off the visiting Oregon Ducks (15-10, 6-6) 72-57 in the latest edition of the Civil War Basketball Game, completing their first regular-season series sweep of their arch-rivals from Eugene since the 2009-10 season.

Louis King topped the Ducks with 20 points while grabbing eight rebounds.

Pilots Suffer Tough Home Defeat At Hands Of Dons

At Portland, Oregon:

Frankie Ferrari scored 20 points on Saturday as the San Francisco Dons (20-6 overall, 8-4 in WCC play) held off the Portland Pilots (7-20, 0-12) 68-63, condemning the hosts (one of six Division I teams still winless in conference play) to their 15 defeat in their last 16 games.

Holland Woods scored 27 points (while dishing out ten assists) while Michael Nuga added 22 and Sal Nuhu 20 on Thursday as the Portland State Vikings (10-14, 5-8 overall) defeated the visiting Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (7-17, 5-9) 103-94.

Bernie Andre (who grabbed 12 rounds) and Luke Avdalovic each scored 20 points for the visitors, who have now dropped four consecutive contests.

In the inaugural Alliance of American Football contest for both clubs, running back Kenneth Farrow II ran four yards for a touchdown on the opening play of the fourth quarter while Nick Rose converted three field goals as the San Antonio Commanders defeated the visiting San Diego Fleet 15-6 on Saturday.

Pilots Grounded Again

At Portland, Oregon:

James Bateman scored 28 points on Saturday as the Loyola Marymount Lions (17-8 overall, 5-6 in WCC play) defeated the struggling Portland Pilots (7-19, 0-11) 72-55 on the road.

The Pilots have dropped 11 straight games.

Beavers Get Back On Winning Track Against Struggling Cal

At Corvallis, Oregon:

Those Thompson Brothers, Stephen, Jr. and Ethan scored 21 and 20 points, respectively on Saturday while Tres Tinkle added 19 as the Oregon State Beavers (15-8 overall, 7-4 in Pac-12 play) rebounded with a 79-71 home victory over the California Golden Bears (5-18, 0-11), who have now dropped 19 straight conference games, 12 overall.

Official Program Of The Winds' First (And Last) Home Game

With a picture of their newly-hired head coach Abe Gibron (ex-head coach of the Chicago Bears) being featured, here is the front cover of what turned out to be the Chicago Winds' one-and-only 1975 World Football League regular-season home game as they hosted the Portland Thunder, contested on August 16 of that year.

In front of 3,501 fans at Soldier Field (which, like the 1974 Fire, the Winds shared with the NFL Bears), the Winds would pick up their only victory of their abbreviated 1975 campaign by knocking off the visiting Portland Thunder 25-18 in overtime, thanks to a touchdown pass from quarterback Pete Beathard (who ironically played the previous season for the Portland Storm) to wide receiver John Gilliam.

The franchise was revoked on September 2, 1975 after two major investors withdrew $175,000 they had deposited with the WFL.

Thunder Ticket Stub

Here's a ticket stub for the Portland Thunder's October 19, 1975 World Football League contest against the Jacksonville Express.

In front of 8, 713 fans at Portland Civic Stadium (now Providence Park) in what turned out to be the final game for both clubs as the WFL folded three days later, the Thunder topped the Express 30-13.

Vulcans' 1975 Game Program

Here's the front cover of the official program of the Birmingham Vulcans' September 13, 1975 World Football League contest against the San Antonio Wings (who were the 1974 Florida Blazers).

THe Vulcans defeated the Wings 33-24 in front of 12, 500 fans at Birmingham's Legion Field.

Before 15,862 fans at Honolulu Stadium, The Hawaiians fell to the Sun 37-19.

Frank Robinson, Baseball Hall of Famer, First Player To Be Named MVP In Both Leagues, R.I.P.

Frank Robinson, the baseball Hall of Fame slugger who was the only player to win the Most Valuable Player award in both the National (Cincinnati Reds, 1961) and American (Baltimore Orioles, 1966) Leagues, passed away on Thursday at age 83.

Mr. Robinson spent part of 21 seasons in the Majors as a player.  He hit 586 home runs, tallied nearly 3,000 base hits, was a 12-time All-Star.

Frank won the Triple Crown award in 1966 with the Orioles by leading the Junior Circuit with 49 home runs, 122 runs batted in, and batting .353 as Baltimore won their first World Series title, sweeping the defending champions Los Angeles Dodgers in four games.

Frank was elected on his first try to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982.

BYU Keeps Pilots Winless In WCC Play

At Portland, Oregon:

T.J. Haws scored 22 points while Yoeli Childs added 17 (to go with his 11 rebounds) as the BYU Cougars (15-10 overall, 7-3 in WCC play) handed the struggling Portland Pilots (7-18, 0-10; one of seven Division I schools still winless in conference play) their 11th straight defeat 83-48.

No Pilots scored in double figures.

Bears Too Much For Visiting Vikings

At Greeley, Colorado:

Jonah Radebaugh scored a career-high 28 points while Jordan Davis added 25 on Thursday as the Northern Colorado Bears (14-8 overall, 8-3 in Big Sky play) dominated the visiting Portland State Vikings (9-13, 4-6) 80-62.

Cardinal Batter Beavers In Corvallis

At Corvallis, Oregon:

Oscar Da Silva scored 23 points (while grabbing nine rebounds) while Josh Sharma added 20 on Thursday as the Stanford Cardinal (12-10 overall, 5-5 in Pac-12 play) dominated the Oregon State Beavers (14-8, 6-4) 83-60 on the road.

In front of 21,357 fans at State Fair (now Independence Stadium) on September 25, 1974, the Steamer (the newly-transplanted Houston Texans), fell to the Grizzlies 17-3.

Sharks' Media Guide

Here's the front cover of the official 1974 media guide of the Jacksonville Sharks of that year's version of the World Football League.

The Sharks folded after playing 14 games of their original 20-game schedule (with a 4-10 record).

On the cover were team owner Fran Monaco, who, when the Sharks' money problems were worsening, borrowed some $27,000 from the other fellow on the cover, head coach Bud Asher, whom the owner soon afterward fired.

I Didn't Know These Guys Had Enough Money To Print A Media Guide

Here's the official media guide of the ill-fated Detroit Wheels, who played fourteen games (with a 1-13 record) in the 1974 version of the World Football League before calling it quits.

Stormy Seas In Portland

Here's the official 1974 fact book (or media guide) of the Portland Storm of that year's version of the World Football League.  In 1975, the Storm gave way to the Thunder, which went under with the WFL in October of that year.

No, Not THOSE Houston Texans

Not to be confused with the same-named NFL team that began playing in 2002, were talking about the Houston Texans who played in the 1974 version of the World Football League.

This is the Texans' official media guide.

These Texans were transplanted to Shreveport, Louisiana in September of 1974 (and renamed the Steamer).  That club folded with the WFL in October of 1975.

Fleeting WFL Moment In The Big Apple

Here's the official 1974 schedule of the New York Stars of that year's version of the World Football League.

Just past that season's midway point, the Stars were sold and transplanted to Charlotte, North Carolina, eventually becoming the Charlotte Hornets, who remained in existence until the WFL folded in October, 1975.

Running back Sony Michel scored the only touchdown of Super Bowl LIII with his run from two yards out midway through the fourth quarter on Sunday as the New England Patriots won their record-tying sixth Super Bowl title 13-3 over the Los Angeles Rams in the lowest-scoring Super Bowl ever.

Quarterback Tom Brady, who completed 21 of 35 passes for 262 yards (12 of them for 141 yards to game Most Valuable Player Julian Edelman) became the first player to win six Super Bowl titles.

Head coach Bill Belichik became the first coach to win six Super Bowls and ties Green Bay's Curly Lambeau and the Chicago Bears' George Halas with six NFL championships amongst coaches.

At Boulder, Colorado:

Tyler Bey scored 27 points (converting all nine shots from the field in the process) and grabbed 10 rebounds on Saturday as the Colorado Buffaloes (12-9 overall, 3-6 in Pac-12 play) held off the visiting Oregon Ducks (13-9, 4-5) 51-37.


Bengals Hold Off Vikings In Pocatello

At Pocatello, Idaho:

Gary Chivichyan scored 16 points on Saturday---12 of them on four three-pointers----as the Idaho State Bengals (8-12 overall, 4-7 in Big Sky play) held off the visiting Portland State Vikings (9-12, 4-6) 69-67, snapping the guests' three-game winning streak.

Beavers Knock Off Utes At SLC

At Salt Lake City, Utah:

Tres Tinkle scored 31 points on Saturday while Kylor Kelley blocked six shots as the Oregon State Beavers (14-7 overall, 6-3 in Pac-12 play) knocked off the Utah Runnin' Utes (11-10, 5-4) 81-72.

Timmy Allen paced the Utes with 24 points.
