INDIANS BLANK BLUE JAYS, CAPTURE FIRST AMERICAN LEAGUE PENNANT SINCE 1997

At Toronto:

Starting pitcher Ryan Merritt and the bullpen combined on a shutout while Coco Crisp hit a home run as the Cleveland Indians blanked the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0 on the road in game five of the American League Championship Series on Wednesday as the Indians won their first American League pennant since 1997 (their sixth overall) four games to one.

Indians relief pitcher Andrew Miller was named series Most Valuable Player.

Cleveland will host the opening game of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers or Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.  The Indians gained home-field advantage due to the American League's victory in July's All-Star Game.

At Toronto:

In Tuesday fourth game of the American League Championship Series, Josh Donaldson hit a third-inning home run while Aaron Sanchez pitched six strong innings as the Toronto Blue Jays avoided elimination by defeating the visiting Cleveland Indians 5-2.

The Indians, who still lead the series three games to one, can wrap up their first American League pennant since 1997 with a game-five win in Toronto on Wednesday.

At Toronto:

Jason Kipnis and Mike Napoli each hit a home run and the bullpen came to the rescue after starting pitcher Trevor Bauer's exit due to a bloody finger as the Cleveland Indians on Monday night took game three of the American League Championship Series 4-2 on the road over the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Indians, who lead the series three games to none, can wrap up their first American League pennant (and gain their first World Series appearance) since 1997 with a game-four victory in Toronto on Tuesday.

Only once has a team come back from a three-games-to-none deficit to win a best-of-seven series in Major League Baseball postseason history----the Boston Red Sox doing the trick against the New York Yankees in the 2004 American League Championship Series (which was followed by a four-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals for their first World Series championship since 1918).

Josh Tomlin (who started), Andrew Miller, and Cody Allen combined on a three-hitter while Carlos Santana hit a home run and Francisco Lindor had an RBI single on Saturday as the Cleveland Indians defeated the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 in the second game of the American League Championship Series, which the Indians now lead two games to none.

At Cleveland:

Francisco Lindor hit a two-run homer while Corey Kluber pitched six and one-third innings of shutout ball as the Cleveland Indians blanked the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 2-0 in Friday's opening game of the American League Championship Series.

Anthony Miller and Cody Allen came in relief to finish the shutout win for the Indians, in search of their first pennant since 1997.

ROYALS TOP BLUE JAYS 4-3, WIN SECOND STRAIGHT AL PENNANT

At Kansas City:

Ben Zobrist and Mike Moustakas hit a home run while Lorenzo Cain scored the winning run from first base in the eighth inning on Friday as the Kansas City Royals defeated the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 in game six of the American League Championship series and won their second straight league pennant.

The Royals will open the World Series at home Tuesday night against the New York Mets.

Marco Estrada pitched 7 2/3 innings of three-hit ball while Troy Tulowitzki delivered a three-run double in the sixth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays dominated the visiting Kansas City Royals 7-1 in Wednesday's fifth game of the American League Championship Series.

The Royals, who still lead the series three games to two, can wrap up their second straight pennant with a home win in Kansas City on Friday.

Ben Zobrist hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Alex Rios added a solo shot in the second inning as the Kansas City Royals destroyed the Toronto Blue Jays 14-2 in Tuesday's fourth game of the American League Championship Series on the road.

The Royals can lock up their second straight pennant (and trip to the World Series) with a game-five victory in Toronto on Wednesday.
