Niners Use Defense To Top Bucs On Road To Open Regular Season

At Tampa, Florida:

In Sunday's National Football League opener for both clubs, Richard Sherman and Ahkello Witherspoon each ran back an intercepted Jameis Winston pass for a touchdown as the San Francisco 49ers, who picked off three passes overall (one more than they did all last season) overcame and then overpowered the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-17 on the road, snapping an eight-game road losing streak.

Niners Fall To Bucs In Tampa

At Tampa, Florida:

In Sunday National Football Action, quarterback Jameis Winston threw for 312 yards and two touchdowns as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-7) ended their four-game skid by holding off the visiting San Francisco 49ers (2-9) 27-9.

Bucs Overcome Early 14-Point Deficit, Overpower Niners On Road

At Santa Clara, California:

Quarterback Jameis Winston threw for three touchdowns on Sunday as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-3) overcame an early 14-point deficit and manhandled the San Francisco 49ers (1-6) 34-17 on the road.

The defeat was the niners' sixth successive as San Francisco is on its' longest losing skid since 2008.

Tampa Bay won six games this past season, triple their 2014 total.  Still, ownership decided to make a change.

The Buccaneers lost their last four games this year.

Malcolm Glazer, Owner of Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Manchester United, R.I.P.

Malcolm Glazer, who since 1995 had owned the National Football League's Tampa Bay Buccaneers and who owned (since 2005) English Premier League soccer powerhouse Manchester United, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 85.

Under Mr. Glazer's ownership, the Buccaneers made seven playoff appearances and won a Super Bowl title following the 2002 season.  Meanwhile, the Red Devils won five English Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League crown.

Niners Smother Bucs In Tampa, Close In On Playoff Berth

At Tampa, Florida:

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick completed 19 of 29 passes for 203 yards and a pair of touchdowns (four yards to Michael Crabtree, 52 yards to Vernon Davis) while Phil Dawson kicked four field goals (47, 43, 21, 35 yards) as the San Francisco 49ers found themselves on the cusp of clinching a playoff berth Sunday with their 33-14 National Football League road win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Niners Batter Bucs To Keep Two-Game Lead Atop NFC West

At San Francisco:


Quarterback Alex Smith threw for 170 yards and three touchdowns (two to tight end Vernon Davis) and Frank Gore racked up his second straight 100-yard game on the ground, picking up 125 yards and a touchdown in the process as the San Francisco 49ers (4-1), off to their best start in nine years, demolished the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-2) 48-3 in Sunday National Football League action.  The win, the Niners' most lopsided since 1987, keeps them two game ahead of Seattle atop the NFC West Division.

Bucs Hand Punchless Niners First Home Shutout Defeat Since '77

At San Francisco:

Josh Freeman threw for 136 yards and two touchdowns as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-3) manhandled the San Francisco 49ers (3-7) 21-0 on Sunday, marking the first time the Niners were blanked at home since October 7, 1977, when the Atlanta Falcons won 7-0.
