Van Cliburn, the American pianist whose first-place award at the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow made him an overnight sensation and propelled him to a hugely successful and lucrative career, passed away on Wednesday at his Fort Worth, Texas home at the age of 78.
Mr. Cliburn had been undergoing treatments for bone cancer.
