The Regional Semifinal ("Sweet Sixteen") round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament commenced with four games on Thursday, two of them in the Midwest Region with both contests taking place at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.
In the opener, Demetrius Jackson scored 20 points while Pat Connaughton added 16 (to go with his ten rebounds) as third-seeded Notre Dame (32-5) defeated seventh-seeded Wichita State (30-5) 81-70 as the Fighting Irish reached the Elite Eight for the first time since 1979. Fred VanVleet scored 25 points and Darius Carter added 22 to pace the Shockers.
In the nightcap, Trey Lyles scored 14 points as the unbeaten and overall top-seeded Kentucky Wildcats are off to men's college basketball's first 37-0 start following their 78-39 annihilation of the fifth-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers (25-10).
Notre Dame and Kentucky will face each other in the tournament for the first time since 1970 in Saturday's Midwest Regional Final, with the winner heading to Indianapolis and the Final Four.

NCAA Midwest: Shockers, Mountaineers Advance To Sweet Sixteen
Two games were played in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament on Sunday.
At Omaha, Nebraska:
Tekele Cotton scored 19 points while Fred VanVleet added 17 as the seventh-seeded Wichita State Shockers (30-4), with all five starters scoring in double-figures, knocked off the second-seeded Kansas Jayhawks (27-9) 78-65.
At Columbus, Ohio:
Devin Williams scored 16 points and grabbed ten rebounds as the fifth-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers (25-9) topped the fourth-seeded Maryland Terrapins (28-7) 69-59.

NCAA Midwest: Coach Cal's Cats, Fighting Irish (In OT) Advance To Sweet Sixteen
Two games were played in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament's Midwest Region in third-round action on Saturday.
At Louisville, Kentucky:
Aaron Harrison scored 13 points while Trey Lyles added 11 to go with his 11 rebounds as the top overall-seeded Kentucky Wildcats are off to college basketball's first 36-0 start following their 64-51 victory over the #8-seeded Cincinnati Bearcats (23-11).

Steve Vasturia scored 20 points while Jerian Grant, who added 16, scored a pair on the game-clinching layup with 18 seconds remaining in overtime as Notre Dame (31-5) outdistanced the sixth-seeded Butler Bulldogs (23-11) 67-64, despite Roosevelt Jones' 23 points for the Bulldogs. For the third-seeded Fighting Irish, it was their first win over their in-state rival in 26 years and it locked up their first Sweet-Sixteen appearance in 12 years.

Four games were played on Friday as action in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Men's Division I Men's Basketball Tournament continued.
At Omaha, Nebraska:
Frank Mason III scored 17 points as the second-seeded Kansas Jayhawks (27-8) manhandled the fifteenth-seeded New Mexico State Aggies (23-11) 75-56, snapping the Western Athletic Conference champions' 13-game winning streak.
Fred VanVleet scored 27 points while Ron Baker, in adding 15, converted seven of eight free throws in the final two minutes to help the seventh-seeded Wichita State Shockers (29-4) held off the tenth-seeded Indiana Hoosiers (20-14) 81-76.
At Columbus, Ohio:

NCAA Midwest: Fighting Irish Hold Off Pesky Huskies; Bulldogs Hold Off Longhorns; Bearcats Nose Out Boilermakers In OT; UK Wildcats Smack Hampton
The second round of the 2015 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament commenced on Thursday with sixteen games, four of them in the Midwest Region.
At Pittsburgh:
In the opener, Zach Auguste scored 25 points as the third-seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish (30-5) held off the #14-seeded Northeastern Huskies (23-12) 69-65.
In the second contest, Kellen Dunham scored 20 points as the sixth-seeded Bulter Bulldogs (23-10) downed the eleventh-seeded Texas Longhorns (20-14) 56-48.
At Louisville, Kentucky:
A. J. Hammons scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the eighth-seeded Cincinnati Bearcats (23-10) defeated the ninth-seeded Purdue Boilermakers (21-13) 66-65 in overtime. The Bearcats' Troy Caupain forced overtime with his buzzer-beating layup at the end of regulation.
Karl-Anthony Towns scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the overall #1-seeded Kentucky Wildcats (35-0) pistolwhipped the sixteenth-seeded Hampton Pirates (17-18) 79-56, despite a 22-point, 10-rebound performance from the Pirates' Quinton Chievous.
