At Washington:
James Southerland scored 16 points, while C.J. Fair added 13 and Michael Carter-Williams 12 (to go with his 10 rebounds) as the #4 Syracuse Orangemen (30-9) held #3 Marquette (26-9) to the lowest scoring total in a NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament regional final since the shot clock was introduced in 1986 as they defeated the Golden Eagles 55-39 in Saturday East Regional final. The Orangemen will play in their first Final Four since winning the national title in 2003. Next Saturday, they will face the winner of Sunday's Michigan-Florida game in one national semifinal in Atlanta.
The regional semifinal round (the "Sweet Sixteen") of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament commenced on Thursday with four games, two of them in the East Regional, both of them played at the Verizon Center in Washington. The rankings are the teams' respective regional seedings.
In the opener, Jamil Wilson scored 16 points coming off the bench as #3 Marquette Golden Eagles (26-8) defeated #2 Miami (29-7) 71-61.
In the nightcap, Michael Carter-Williams scored a career-high 24 points as #4 Syracuse (29-9) knocked off top-seeded Indiana (29-7) 61-50, avenging their defeat at the hands of the Hoosiers in the 1987 Championship Game.
Marquette and Syracuse, two schools preparing to leave this current version of the Big East Conference, heading for the new Big East and ACC next season respectively, will play in the East Regional final with a trip to Atlanta and the Final Four at stake on Saturday at 1:30 PM Pacific Time (CBS).

At Dayton, Ohio:
Victor Oladipo, who scored 16 points, converted on a three-point shot with 14 seconds remaining as the top-seeded Indiana Hoosiers (29-6) overcame the ninth-seeded Temple Owls (24-10) 58-52, spoiling a 31-point performance from the Owls' Khalif Wyatt.
At Austin, Texas:
Rion Brown scored 21 points while Shane Larkin, who added 17, delivered a go-ahead three-point basket very late in the second half, as the second-seeded Miami Hurricanes (29-6) defeated Illinois (23-13) 63-59 to advance to the Round of 16 for only the second time in their history.

At Lexington, Kentucky:
Vander Blue scored 29 points as the third-seeded Marquette Golden Eagles (25-8) outlasted the #6-seeded Butler Bulldogs (28-9) 74-72.
At San Jose, California:
C.J. Fair scored 18 points as fourth-seeded Syracuse (28-9) overcame a rough shooting night and defeated #12-seeded California (21-12) 66-60.
Second-round action in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament continued on Friday with four games from the East Regional.
At Dayton, Ohio:
In the first of two games at the University of Dayton's arena, Khalif Wyatt scored 31 points (making six free throws in the final 32 seconds) as the #9-seeded Temple Owls (24-9) knocked off the #8-seeded North Carolina State Wolfpack (24-11) 76-72.
In the second contest, Yogi Ferrell scored 14 of his 16 pints in the first six minutes as the top-seeded Indiana Hoosiers (28-6) had no trouble as they defeated #16-seeded James Madison (21-15) 83-62 in a game that wasn't as close as the final score indicated despite 24 points from the Dukes' Andre Madison.
At Austin, Texas:
In the first of two East Regional contests played at the Frank Erwin Center, Durand Scott scored 21 points as the second-seeded Miami Hurricanes (28-6) blew away the fifteenth-seeded Pacific Tigers (22-13) 78-49.
In the second match, Brandon Paul scored 17 points as the seventh-seeded Illinois Fighting Ilini (23-12) fought off the tenth-seeded Colorado Buffaloes (21-12) 57-49.

Four games were played on Thursday in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament's East Regional.
At Louisville, Kentucky:
In the first of two East Regional games played at Rupp Arena, sixth-seeded Butler (27-8) defeated eleventh-seeded Bucknell (28-6) 68-56. Rotnei Clarke scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half Roosevelt Jones and Andrew Smith (who grabbed 16 rebounds) each scored 14 for the Bulldogs. Joe Willman scored 20 points for the Bison.
In the second contest, Vander Blue (who scored 16 points) connected on a layup with one second remaining as the third-seeded Marquette Golden Eagles(24-8) overcame a late nine-point deficit and upended the #14-seeded Davidson Wildcats (26-8) 59-58 to advance to the Round of 32.
At San Jose, California:
In the first of two West Regional contests at the HP Pavilion, Allen Crabbe scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the twelfth-seeded California Golden Bears (21-11) knocked off the #5-seeded UNLV Runnin' Rebels (25-10) 64-61.
In the nightcap, Brandon Triche scored 20 points as the fourth-seeded Syracuse Orangmen (27-9) made mince meet of the #13-seeded Montana Grizzlies (25-7) 81-34, the most lopsided victory by a team seeded third or worse. No Grizzlies scored more than five points.
